Motorised roller shutters come with two motor types: 240V hardwired, which connects to your home’s mains, and battery-operated E-Series, which is fully self-contained. Both are operated by wall switch or remote and feel identical to use. The choice almost always comes down to whether running power to the opening is practical.

240V hardwired is the default for new installs and any window where cabling can be run neatly. It never needs charging, is ideal for large or frequently used shutters, and is the most set-and-forget option. If the wall is open, being re-rendered, or the shutter is big, hardwired is usually the right call.

Battery E-Series shines in retrofits. Where chasing a wall to run 240V would mean damage, mess or cost — a solid brick wall, a finished room, a heritage facade — a battery motor gives you full motorisation with no mains wiring at all. You recharge it periodically, much like any cordless device around the home.

In a power outage, battery units keep working independently, while hardwired shutters can be specified with manual override so you are never locked out. Neither leaves you stuck. How often do battery roller shutters need charging?

It depends on how often the shutter is used, but battery E-Series motors are designed to run for an extended period between charges and recharge much like any cordless device. For very large or high-use shutters, hardwired is usually the more convenient choice.

What happens to motorised shutters in a power cut?
